Antifertility effect of curcumin, an indigenous medicine in rats

Background: Curcumin is an active constituent, obtained from rhizome of Curcuma longa linn, known to have broad medicinal properties, was studied for its effect on fertility in female rats. has anti-ovulatory probably by antiestrogenic activity through suppression negative feedback estrogen pituitary.Methods: Inbred Charles Foster albino rats (150-180 gm) were used study. They divided into different groups and treated with curcumin (25 mg/kg. 50 mg/kg body weight) as per schedule. The antigonadotropic, antiestrogenic, anti-implantation abortifacient demonstrated.Results: results showed significant reduction the number implants size litters compared normal control group. Tamoxifen (10mg/ kg bodyweight) a antifertility drug, which further substantiated effects curcumin.Conclusions: indicated ways exerts thus can play vital role control.
